My Progression from 2007-2011 by Rivalhopeso My Progression from 2007-2011 by Rivalhopeso
-edit- 2011 has coem and is now going. it's been a crazy years fo rme having about 3 months off for exams at two different parts of the year. i felt i learnt stuff then forgot it and had to practise against and once i was getting good again has to take more exams. but that's life. hope you like this and i would urge you to download this and make your own xDD

Well this was definitely worth it! Recently i have been depressing myself by comparing myself with other artists that are faaar better than me and are already at professional level at aged 18 etc.

Myself and :iconsevenviolets: actually have that in common and after seeing this: [link] by :iconnuriko-kun: i decided to do the same.

I think everyone should do one! If you already have done an art meme for your manga drawing, i'd really like to see it.

DETAILS: All these drawings i did (obviously xD) between 2007-2010 but not all can be found on deviantart. Such as the really early (/bad) ones as they are just too shameful. lol i used to think they were quite good back then xD This really helps me to appreciate my drawing now at age 17.

The left hand side are my colour attempts lol. That stil is my desperate weakness and i really look for shortcuts when doing it. The middle column would've been all girls but i really only ever used to males and you can probably notice that i havd a very strong preference for face angles. Almost all of my early ones had the face 3/4 to the viewers left. lol.
And third column is my male characters. In the last row, they are the Aku Chi character; Miyasa and Tsuyoshi Mandai. i hope someone recognised them xD

Further details are summarised to the left of the columns.

Thank you very very much for everyone's support especially the likes of :iconmayshing: :iconmeganerid: and :icondeamon89: for their teaching inspiration.

Please please please leave your thoughts and feelings! thanks a lot.

well you're lucky! i never had art lessons and had to teach myself. i really found it difficult, especially to begin with as you could probably see. but once some people on dA started giving me feedback within like 2 years i improved a lot.

Yeah, that's something I learned the hard way. Big no-no. If you are going to compare yourself to other artists, do with with a chew toy and some ice-cream. I find that it helps keep the depression down. :D

Still, you've progressed at a wonderful rate. I can only imagine how awesome you will be in another 3 years. Who knows? Maybe beyond Genzoman levels. A lot can happen in 3 years.

hahaha i definitely don't think so. i definitely have some goals. but my targets and idols are in a different league. and anyways, the artists like genzoman and artgerm are always saying things like they still feel liek they can get better. what will be really interesting is seeing what work they'll be producing in three years lol.

thanks a lot for the comment xD i need to draw something amazing before the end of the year so i can feel i've improved even more. i need to add 2011 to the end of this lol. :)

thoguh i haven't been drawing nearly as much as i did last year. i had so much more time :(

we'll see xD

if you keep questionning yourself and try to draw new things(I mean, not only humans), it will give you a larger panel of expression.
you're already good at dressing a background and you like to put details.
You still young, if you look at the best artists, most of them are 23 or more... and the very top artists are more than 30. There are some younger exceptions but it's still from time and experience.

keep it up!

"Recently i have been depressing myself by comparing myself with other artists that are faaar better than me and are already at professional level at aged 18 etc."
I have had that exact same problem for so long-it's almost impossible not to when you're on dA so much!! Even though I only started drawing manga/anime 2 1/2 years ago and all these great artists had years more practice than me I was still very unsatisfied with what I drew without refernce...but now I've learned that I'm not getting anywhere without practising and failing-learning from your mistakes is key!!
*ehm*
Now enough of my random little ramble x_x I just love looking at Progression Charts!! :la:
I would firstly say your coloring has improved so much!! Comparing just 09' and '10 there's alot more depth to the shading and It also looks like you picked up the digital stuff really quick!! I still can't do a good lineart to save my life and traditional takes so much less time *_* hah and the girl from 09' looks very cute btw^^
And in those 3 years-can I just say the imrovement blows my mind?? You're probably twice as good even now! I applaud you

xD thanks a lot. i'm pretty happy with my improvements but even though it's slightly depressing to see awesome artist's, since i wrote hat, i've decided to rather than let it get me down, let it motivate me. if i know i have still a long way to go, yet i feel i'm dawing well already, then i can't wait until 2 years down the line xD

i think digital art and traditional art both have their massive differences. i prefer digital art overal because if you made a mistake, correcting it is far easier. With traditional art, once you put ink down that's it really. But tradtional is a nicer, more organic feel i think. Also you are always looking at the whole picture. like with digital art i find that whne i zoom right in to do serious detail or trying to make a limb look perfect, i zoom out and it is completely disproportionate to the rest of the body lol xD

your avatar is similar to mine ;) :iconloveloveplz:

i dunno what you;re talking about when you are criticising yourself. your art is awesome! and you got 6000 views for one deviation!! OMFG! also 20k pageviews in 2 years. that's crazy. especially with only drawing from 2 1/2 years! 0.0
i applaud you!!

tbh i think what sets us apart is the amount fo drawing you do. i wish i could do more but i loose juice and as you can see, in 1 year and 3 months i habve only 50 deviations. you have 418 deviations in 2 years! Obviously when you draw asmuch as you do! It's no surprise you have gotten so good so quickly. i really should really use you as an example... i should use my summer to really improve. but that's a kinda unrealistic plan :(

anyways i faved your dev and i'm gonna watch you! see how much more you can improve ;)
oh and just before. would you recommend me doing commisions? i'm not sur eif i'm good enough for people to pay me? but i guess if i do it super cheap lol xD what do you think?

different proportions...? i don;t get that. Do you mean just different styles of drawing? What about if this is my style i enjoy drawing this way?

:iconlagomita:

not different styles, In a same style of drawing you can make different people, the proportions are like long face, sharp face, round face, child like etc...

Wow! You've really improved so much over the years! O: Especially with your accuracy at anatomy~ AND your shading in the hair! I LOVE the hair in your last drawing <3<33

Random Idea! :dummy:
If you always look for shortcuts when colouring and find it difficult, you could just gradually use colour more frequently-- I often see on dA where people have a predominantly black and white drawing, and only colour the eyes or the hair. So it's just a little colouring, but can also be quite a dramatic look!

oh wow i never thought of doing it that way. then i wouldn't have to stress about the entirety of colour and focus on a specific thing. Also it'd feel fresh and not lethargic. Wow thanks a lot for that advise i'll definitely try that out to help gradually get better. although knowing me i'll feel it looks unfinished, try to colour it all, and then get bored again lol.

thanks for the comments too :)

I keep doing this comparing thing so I sometimes think that I can't draw (although the professionals have been drawing for much more years than me and I've just started drawing in this style in 2009...) ><
So I will definitely make a 'progress picture' to see that now I don't draw as badly as at the very beginning. ^^

Aha! I see you have completed it! Looks like I will have to dig around in my wardrobe for my old drawings. I didn't start taking drawing seriously until last year though, so I doubt there will be many!

I think I also might try to find some of my super old drawings from when I was younger, hohoho.

You say that you find colouring the hardest thing, you can always watch how people colour and stuff on youtube and livestreams! That's what I do xD Haha

I find proportions the hardest! My people always seem to look funny :/

But seeing as i'm ill again, it looks like I can have a few days of constant practice, hehe.

You should add onto this meme this time next year! To see how much you improve in 2011!

Good luck! and, Look out for my improvement meme later on this month xDD

yeah i'll keep an eye out. I'll keep adding to the meme or in 3-4 years time i'll make a new one for 2010-2014 xD

Yeah proportions are really annoying and i can only get them right after hours of revising my drawings which is annoying but in the end i get it more or less right. but with colouring. i don't really get it lol. i can do greyscale shading to some extent. But yeah, hopefully i can improve as much as Nuriko-kun had done.

Lol i had to find the old drawings from under my ed. when i started i filled 5 a4 sketch pads of drawing. i had plently to pick from whne i thought of looking for a crappy drawing i did in 2007 xD

i'm always interested in how people progress. some people it takes one year ot get the hang of it, some when they start you can already see they have an eye for it, some much longer, and other, just never xD Not to be rude but it's true some people just can't do manga :P

Thanks for commenting :) *hug*
